WELCOME TO OUR VILLAGE

Goodworth Clatford is a picturesque village located in the beautiful Hampshire countryside with a meandering chalk stream at its heart.  The village lies just 2 miles south of Andover and 4 miles north of the market town of Stockbridge.  The historic cities of Salisbury and Winchester are a short drive away.

A vibrant village with a diverse community, it is home to historic buildings, a community-run village shop and post office, a 13th century church, a primary school, two pubs, tennis courts, a plethora of countryside walks, and much more.

The village has a long history with origins dating back to Saxon times when a pagan settlement known as Goda’s enclosure was established along the river.  By 1086, the area was recorded as Godorde in the Doomsday book and the church register of 1538 names Goodworth Clatford.  The village was for centuries a self-contained farming community with water meadows and good grazing land sheltered by a gentle rolling landscape.

The changing needs of the post war period brought increased development not least to replace the school and pub destroyed by a stray flying bomb.   Despite the inevitable changes to the rural character of the village and the loss of its farms and associated trades, the peaceful river and water meadows remain and, together with most of Village Street, are protected within a conservation area.

Today, with a population of just under 700, the village is an active community which hosts several clubs and societies, including bell ringing, a neighbourhood watch scheme, a gardening society and a WI group.  The village club runs events throughout the year and the annual Village Fete is a classic of its kind.

While the village will continue to evolve to meet the needs of future generations, the heart of the village will remain the people who live, work and visit here. We welcome you all to our village.
